There’s a relentless showcase of some fantastic homegrown talent playing live in Brixton this week from Congo Natty to Misty Miller and from Jessie Ware to Fat White Family… here are our picks of what’s on in Brixton this week.
Monday 26th January: “Independent Venue Week – Launch Night” with Misty Miller Shame and Shark Dentist at The Windmill
Independent Venue Week is a national 7-day celebration of small music venues around the UK running from 26th Jan to 1st Feb. Flying the flag for Brixton is the fantastic Windmill pub who welcome a local favourite and one-to-watch in 2015, Misty Miller. Support comes from local teens SHAME who’ve been creating a nice buzz of late.
Tuesday 27th January: The Bigger Boat Film Quiz Upstairs at The Ritzy
Bringing you (Inter)stellar questions from the world of film, this Ritzy monthly has been hailed as London’s best film Quiz Show since its Inception. Everyone is welcome: whether you have A Beautiful Mind or you’re a Raging Bull. There’s no limits on team size either, from the Odd Couple or if there’s Se7en of you. For A Few Dollars More you can enjoy nice food and drink too!
Wednesday 28th January: “Independent Venue Week” with Fat White Family and Meat Raffle at The Windmill
After launching on Monday with the excellent and hotly tipped Misty Miller, The Windmill hosts one of Brixton’s greatest exports on Wednesday with local rabble rousers the Fat White Family headlining with label mates Meat Raffle. This (unsurprisingly) sold out in seconds and is sure to be one of the greatest Brixton gigs of the year so if you’ve got a ticket make sure you’re at the front and if you haven’t, don’t even attempt to try and get in . There will be no tickets on the door unfortunately.
Thursday 29th January: Jessie Ware live at O2 Academy Brixton
Local electro-pop songstress Jessie Ware heads back to the manor for two Brixton Academy shows in celebration of her second album (October 2014) on PMR / Island Records “Tough Love”, the follow up to her soulful debut “Devotion” which became one of the most critically acclaimed albums of 2012. Friday 30th January: Dub 4 Life with Congo Natty, Channel One, Ragga Twins and lots more at Electric Brixton
Nightspot Cinema combines films with raves and Sound System Culture is the latest and definitive documentary about the scene which flourished in the UK as a result of the mass immigration of Caribbean people to the British Isles during the 1950s and ’60s. When the film ends, the raving begins with Congo Natty, Channel One, Ragga Twins and stacks more until 6am.
Saturday 31st January: RBMA presents San Soda, Hunee and Jeremy ‘Underground’ Paris at Plan B
Another year, another RBMA show stopper at Plan B. You’ll all by now be familiar with these parties, which have bought the likes of Âme, Omar S, Roman Flügel and Theo Parrish to Plan B.
Tonight is also extra special with an all night 8 hour back to back to back session with San Soda, Hunee and Jeremy ‘Underground’ Paris.
Sunday 1st February: Rootmaster with Mora live at Hootananny
Formed by an international team of talented musicians who in turn add to the blend their originality and personal style thus creating an explosive mix, Mora are a South London based Latin music band which as well as performing their own original material pays homage through its repertoire to some of the greatest names of the Latin music world.
